Kandra Churchwell, Owner Alo Goods
Company Name: Alō Goods
Your Name: Kandra Churchwell
Your Title: Owner
Special credentials: Years of study on herbs and botanicals. A strong wish that I had paid more attention in chemistry class.
How did your business get started? Crafting for my family, realizing how many chemicals people put on their bodies in a daily basis, my sister encouraging me, and finally a desire to make a living helping other live a clean and healthy life.
Why do you love what you do? Probably the easiest question to answer – I get to make soap! But more seriously, I love being able to use items from nature to prepare goods that help people live healthy from the outside in. Hearing stories from customers is such a joy! When I hear about how much happier they are with their skin, or how excited they were when their package arrived, or how much they apricate zero waste products (that actually work), or just send a friendly howdy, it really makes my day.
What makes your business different from other businesses like yours? There are a lot of soap makers out there for sure. The biggest difference is the word “natural”. Natural can literally mean whatever the company wants it to. Many “natural” products would never quality for our use of the term (“naturally derived” SLS is a good example). For us, natural means from nature, and as close to the way nature made it as possible. We use many of the same things you eat to stay healthy in our products (things like olive oil, lavender, honey, oats, orange juice, cocoa butter to name a few). And, our packaging is a minimal as possible with a focus on compostable, reusable, and recyclable. This all stems from how I was raised and how I raised my kids. Why use anything synthetic, unless necessary?
Tell us about a recent business accomplishment or business success: Based on the support from SHE, I’ve been able to find resources I needed to keep the business going while we dealt with family health issues. SHE has been such a blessing that I would say SHE is my most recent business success. The production workflow needed a few adjustments, including working with a dear friend (total SHE material for sure!) in Chicago to help keep up with product demands, including expanded wholesale accounts.
We’ll be re-launching tooth suds here soon, with a new companion product too! The product launch has been delayed from the COVID19 outbreak, but just a slight delay. We’re very excited about it and can’t wait to share it with you!
Tell us anything you want to share about you and your family: Most of the SHE members know what my family went through in 2018 and continue to overcome today. We’re in it for the long haul and know we’ll emerge triumphant because we have amazing people in our lives. Kevin and I feel blessed to count SHE members as part of our family.
Proud mama of 3 amazing kids, married for 25 years, we have two super cute cats, and my addiction is knitting.
Anything else you want us to know: Alo Goods is my 2nd business. My first was Phases Design Studio where I worked with many amazing businesses as a brand consultant and designer for the past 20 years. I still service a few of my clients, and my years of knowledge in that area is available to help other businesses as a resource library www.DesignFiles.net
